Adressing the conflict in the Middle East
Palestine and Israel both have the right to exist in peace and safety. I believe in a just two-state solution. I don’t support Australia sending arms into the conflict.
I have been approached by quite a number of people expressing their concern regarding the situation in Palestine. I share your desire to see peace and justice in the region, and I broadly agree that Australia should not be contributing arms to the conflict. I sincerely wish all parties would respect and adhere to International Law.
I strongly affirm that Palestine has the absolute right to exist and for its citizens to live in safety. Israel, equally, has the absolute right to exist and for its citizens to live in safety.
This is a deeply complex and protracted conflict, and I do not feel I have either the mandate or the capacity to meaningfully influence it.
My focus is on the pressing issues here in Corangamite – supporting women and children who are facing housing stress, financial hardship, and food insecurity. That is where I believe I can have the greatest impact. In Corangamite, I can make a real difference for families facing housing, food and financial stress
A two-state solution remains the only just and viable pathway forward. It is endorsed by the international community and remains the official policy of all major political parties in Australia. For such a solution to succeed, both Israel and Palestine must be viable, sovereign nations with secure borders, and assured access to land, water, food, and infrastructure. The current cycle of violence cannot deliver this.
Thank you again to those of you who have reached out. While we may not agree on every aspect of this issue, I hope you’ll still consider giving me your #1 vote. I believe we share many values and priorities, especially when it comes to building a fairer, more compassionate community here at home.
